Computer Graphics Tools for Understanding Tensor-Valued Volume Data: A Painting Metaphor (CCR-96-19649, CCR-9996209). PI: David H. Laidlaw Amount: $139,620 Duration: April 1997 Jan 2001. In this project we developed visualization tools using concepts from oil painting, primarily layering and discrete brush strokes. The work was applied to multi-valued medical imaging data and to 2D fluid flow. Example images from both domains are shown in Fig. 1. The work has been presented at a Visualization ’99 Conference panel session “Sensory Design Issues as a Driving Problem for Visualization Research;” a Visualization ’98 Conference panel session “Art and Visualization: Oil and Water?”, October, 1998; the Brown University Neuroscience Department, October 1998; SIGGRAPH, August 1998; the Naval Research Lab, Washington, DC, May 1998; the Human Brain Project (HBP) annual meeting, NIH, Bethesda, MD, May 1998; the NSF Conference on Computing in the Life Sciences, Pomona College, April 1988; the Brown University Computer Science Department, April 1998; and the University of Southern California, April 1998. Images have also been featured recently in two articles in “IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications” about future directions in scientific visualization. The following publications have resulted from this funding: [21] [38] [35] [41] [2] [24] [39] [43] [1] [3]. The research has involved the following graduate students: Song Zhang, Daniel Keefe, Paul Reitsma, and R. Michael Kirby. The research has involved the following undergraduate students: Jonathan Reiter, Laura Brogach, Charlie Curry, Clifford Elgin, and Jit Kee Chin.

Introducing Satellite Remote Sensing Systems and its Application in Archaeology Case Study: Behshahr Plain- Mazandaran

Human groups have considered the Behshahr plain of Mazandaran in the past Due to its particular geographical shape, location between the Caspian Sea and mountains, and the existence of some rivers in the region. However, our knowledge of this area is limited to several published surveys and archaeological investigation of its ancient sites. No detailed research has conducted on the formation of...

Reconstruction of Real-World Objects via Simultaneous Registration and Robust Combination of Multiple Range Images

Range nder devices are quite useful to measure the geometry of real world objects How ever the reconstruction of large and complicated objects often requires the acquisition of multiple range images showing di erent views of the object With our reconstruction method the relative orientations of all range images are determined via simultaneous registration of all range images The registration pr...

Modeling of Climate Change Effects on Groundwater Resources: The Application of Dynamic Systems Approach

The purpose of the present study was the simulation of climate change effects on groundwater resources in Iran by using the dynamic systems approach. The approach was performed through system dynamics modeling process including problem explanation, system description, model development, model testing, and the use of the model for policy analysis. The impact of the application of various exogeno...

The Weil-Petersson metric and volumes of 3-dimensional hyperbolic convex cores

We introduce a coarse combinatorial description of the Weil-Petersson distance dWP(X, Y ) between two finite area hyperbolic Riemann surfaces X and Y . The combinatorics reveal a connection between Riemann surfaces and hyperbolic 3-manifolds conjectured by Thurston: the volume of the convex core of the quasi-Fuchsian manifold Q(X, Y ) with X and Y in its boundary is comparable to the Weil-Peter...

Non-manifold Mesh Extraction from Time-varying Segmented Volumes used for Modeling a Human Heart

We present a new algorithm extracting and fairing surfaces from segmented volumes composed of multiple materials. In a first pass, the material boundaries in the volume are smoothed considering signed distance functions for the individual materials. Second, we apply a marching-cubes-like contouring method providing initial meshes defining material boundaries. Non-manifold features emerge along ...
